Introduction
The Bellanwila –Attidiya sanctuary is considered as the only wildlife refuge situated on the verge of a capital city in south Asia. It is a major remaining water retention/detention area of the Bolgoga river basin, facilitating inflow of torrential water surrounding residential and commercial area. It has been identified as the area of very great scenic beauty situated close to Colombo in Sri Lanka. The area is well known for its high biological diversity. A wide range of aquatic and terrestrial vegetation types are found within it and provides an excellent habitat for fish, amphibians and other aquatic vertebrate and invertebrate fauna, particularly water-fowl.
A large number of endemic and rare species has been constantly recorded from the area. The area has high potential for research, education and recreation and it has been used for pilot research work by various NGOs, Schools and universities.
Garbage is a main problem in the urban context, people put their waste in bare lands, mainly in the wetlands. There is no place to educate people to overcome this problem. Because of that the only urban bird’s sanctuary in Sri Lanka is in high danger.
